Diagnostic Tests

To diagnose your injury or illness, your CHMG doctor will review your medical history and physically examine you. He or she may also recommend a test such as:

  • Digital X-ray – Makes results available sooner than traditional film X-rays and lets a physician enhance images to see them more clearly and provide a more accurate diagnosis
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – Uses a magnetic field, not radiation, to show the inside of your body
  • Electromyography (EMG) – Measures muscles’ electrical activity
  • Nerve conduction velocity study (NCV) – Reveals how fast electrical signals pass through a nerve
  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound – Uses sound waves to show muscles, ligaments, tendons and other structures and provide instant results

Sports Physicals

Make sure your child is healthy enough to play sports. Schedule a physical with a sports medicine physician, and you’ll help your student-athlete embrace an active lifestyle.

Musculoskeletal Treatments

Whenever possible, your personalized treatment plan will begin with one or more of these conservative, nonsurgical methods:

  • Bracing – Stabilizes an injured joint for protection as it heals
  • Exercise therapy – Can ease pain and improve joint and muscle function and mobility
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation – Helps you move more easily, fully and comfortably
  • Pain management – Includes injections of pain-relieving steroids or hyaluronan, a knee lubricant designed to relieve arthritis symptoms

Interventional Spine Care

If you experience chronic back pain, Piedmont Orthopedics’ interventional spine specialist can provide:

  • Therapeutic injections – Delivers anesthetic or steroids directly to a painful muscle or facet joint
  • Radiofrequency ablation – Eliminates nerve tissue that transmits pain signals
  • Spinal cord stimulator trial – Temporarily places leads under your skin that attach to a small, portable generator that disrupts pain signals; determines whether you’d benefit from implantation of a permanent device

Orthopedic Surgery

When surgery is your best treatment option, choose one of our experienced, board-certified orthopedic surgeons trained in advanced procedures, including:

  • Knee surgery
    • Knee arthroscopy – Uses a minimally invasive technique to reconstruct a torn ligament, remove or repair a torn meniscus, or treat other problems
    • Knee replacement – Exchanges all or part of a damaged joint with a prosthesis, sometimes using the guidance of a computer to precisely align the new joint
  • Shoulder surgery
    • Shoulder arthroscopy – Uses a minimally invasive approach to repair a torn rotator cuff, ligament or labrum (cartilage); remove inflamed tissue or relieve other conditions
    • Shoulder replacement – Substitutes an artificial joint for your damaged shoulder
  • Hip replacement (direct anterior approach) – Makes the incision in the front of your hip to affect fewer muscles, reduce postoperative pain and speed recovery; may use real-time imaging technology to help ensure the artificial joint fits precisely and securely
  • Spine surgery
    • Lumbar fusion – Welds vertebrae together to prevent movement that causes pain
    • Microdiscectomy – Removes part of a slipped disc to relieve pressure on a nerve
  • Cartilage (joint cushioning) restoration
    • Autologous chondrocyte implantation – Takes cells from your healthy cartilage to grow in a lab and then implants the new cartilage in your joint
    • Osteochondral allograft transplantation – Replaces damaged cartilage with tissue from a donor
  • Carpal tunnel surgery – Divides the carpal tunnel ligament to ease pressure on the nerve and tendons
  • Fracture repair – Helps heal broken bones
