Biography

A specialist in pediatric and adolescent neurology with more than 30 years of experience, William H. Hickling, MD, is board-certified in pediatrics, neurology, electroencephalography (EEG) and evoke potential. Previously, he was director of stroke service for The Moses H. Cone Hospital.

Dr. Hickling’s professional interests include epilepsy, headaches, autism, Tourette Syndrome, post-concussion syndrome, complex ADHD, disorders of spasticity, demyelinating disorders, pseudotumor cerebri, genetic neurodevelopmental disorders and developmental delay.

As the first child neurologist to practice in Guilford County, Dr. Hickling believes in putting the child at the center of care and providing access to care for all in our region. His greatest satisfaction comes from supporting families and their children, who often face medical crises. He is extraordinarily committed to his patients, some of whom he continues to care for as adults.

In his free time, Dr. Hickling enjoys spending time with his seven grandchildren. He is an ordained elder with his church where he also sings in the choir. On occasion, he watches dramas, documentaries and sports. He is passionate about politics.

“I place the child at the center of my care. I support and encourage my parents by educating them about the neurologic disorder affecting their child. While we are not able to provide good outcomes to all children in our care, we owe them our best efforts. We owe their parents honest and straightforward answers to difficult questions. We need to provide kind, compassionate, timely and respectful care. We need to respect customs and diversity in our multicultural population. We need to provide access to care for all children in our region.” - William H. Hickling, MD
